Venezuela crisis

Venezuela has been ruled by the Socialist PSUV for the past 20 years. From 1999 until his death in 2013, Hugo Chávez was president. She was replaced by her right-hand man, Nicolás Maduro.

Over more than two decades in power, PSUV has taken over many key institutions including the judiciary, the electoral council and the Supreme Court.

But under President Maduro, Venezuela's economy has collapsed. The shortage of basic equipment has been rampant, leaving more than 5 million people on the move. In return, he formed the National Assembly, which is made up only of pro-government supporters with more power than the National Assembly. Since then the two bodies have been in conflict. Mr Maduro was re-elected in 2018 but the election was strongly condemned as fraudulent. The Speaker of Parliament, Juan Guaidó, called Mr Maduro a "usurper" and declared him interim president in January 2019. Mr Maduro remained in the presidential palace and in charge of the country. Many dissident politicians have been arrested and many have fled the country, including Juan Guaidó's adviser, Leopoldo López.
The United States backed Mr. Guaidó, imposing sanctions on Maduro, his family and Venezuelan oil companies, making it difficult to find oil and foreign currency.

Meanwhile, opposition parties disagree on strategy. Because of the hatred of the parliamentary elections, the Parliament seems to be under the control of Mr. Maduro’s party.
