Explained: The role of the Azad Hind Fauj in India’s freedom

India's long-running struggle for independence is full of forgotten and enduring ghettos of freedom fighters. The Indian Army or the Azad Hind Fauj is one such group buried in battlefields. Azad Hind Fauj, an army led by Mohan Singh and made up of prisoners of war in India in Singapore.

Azad Hind Fauj was another name for the All India Army backed by the ideas of Netaji who planned to take foreign aid to overthrow Britain.
Fauj was voluntarily revived by the Netaji administration and joined the struggle for freedom in 1943.

The beginning of Azad Hind Fauj

World War II was at its peak and Britain had been defeated by Singapore and Japan. With the word "Asia for Asia" Japan wanted to make the British and Indian troops productive. About 45,000 Indian soldiers rallied and the Japanese army called for the establishment of Azad Hind Fauj in 1942.

One year after the army took over the new avatar under Bose. Netaji escaped from house arrest in Culcutta to Singapore, under the leadership of Azad Hind Fauj. The Army was later declared the Army of Bose.

Young Fauj

When Azad Hind Fauj was officially launched, it had a strong military force of 85,000. They all believed in the power of youth. He encouraged ordinary people as well to take part in solving this great task: "One of the things you and other people can do is keep up the pressure ... there are going to be some difficult decisions for government". When Azad Hind Fauj or the Indian Army was officially formed, it was strong with 85,000 troops.

Using Azad Hind Radio

Fauj has chosen radio to encourage citizens to fight for freedom. He set up Radio Azad Hind to broadcast information in the Indian languages.

The Army Empowered Women

Rani of the Jhansi faction was appointed as the all-female soldier under the command of Azad Hind Fauj. The women were trained such as night walks, bayonet charging, tricks, weapons skills and ready to fight.

Contributions and Consequences


The extraordinary courage, commitment and sacrifice shown by Azad Hind Fauj has reached India and the country has witnessed a radical revolution. The impact of Azad Hind Fauj on the Indian revolution was not the military but the spirit of courage and determination in India.
